Happy International Day of the Girl!

Happy International Day of the Girl! Now in its fifth year, the United Nations has designated October 11 as a day “to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.” To mark this year’s iteration we bring you, in no particular order, a collection of inspiring messages from high achieving women, to encourage the empowerment of girls everywhere.

KIJANA NI NANI? NA MWANDISHI,  JANEROSA MAFWIMBO Neno kijana limekuwa na maana pana na linakuwa likipata tafsiri mbalimbali kutoka katika kila Taifa, jamii au tamaduni fulani. Kwakuzingatia mifumo au maisha ya jamii tunapata baadhi ya tafsiri za neno kijana kama ifuatavyo: Kijana ni mtu wa miaka 15-24. Hii ni tafsiri ya umoja wa Mataifa. Mathalani nchini Tanzania kijana ni mtu wa miaka 18-35 yaani baada ya balehe na mabadiliko ya maumbile toka utoto kuelekea ukubwa, aidha kw mujibu wa sera ya Taifa ya maendeleo ya vijana ya mwaka 1996 na kufanyiwa marekebisho mwaka 2007, inasema kijana ni mtu mwenye umri kuanzia miaka 15-24. Hivyo basi kijana ni mtu yeyote wa kike au kiume mwenye umri wa miaka 18-35 ambaye kwa mujibu wa mifumo ya kijamii au kitamaduni, kisiasa na kisheria anauwezo wa kujitegemea na kufanya maamuzi yake binafsi. Tofauti kati ya mtoto na kijana, wengi wanashindwa kutofautisha kati ya mtoto na kijana hasa waliopo katika elimu ya msingi na sekondari kutokana
